It’s not often we get to write a good news story about Fianna Fail, and in reality this isn’t Fianna Fail being good, but good news it is. Brian Crowley is Fianna Fail’s only MEP after the election. The record poll topper in the south region has made a brave decision that may see him expelled from his party. He has defied Fianna Fail and switched allegiances from the liberal ALDE group, of which Fianna Fail is a member, to join the new grouping of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR). Why this is good news is because the Liberal group that Fianna Fail remain part of despite Brian’s decision is one of the three federalist leaning groups in the European parliament. The others being Fine Gael’s EPP and the Socialist grouping. This means that the balance of power is gradually swinging away from the federalists who have forced their agenda on the people of Europe unopposed for too long, and we may now see a change in personality in the EU that will have more respect for nations. Of course the press have tried to paint this move towards EU skepticism as some sort of descent into fascism, but then that is what you would expect from a pro federalist media. The new skeptical balance in the EU should make for better and more balanced decisions from the European parliament. One thing that confuses us is in the statement made by FF’s chairman and chief whip wherein they insisted being in a euro-skeptic group is contrary to FF’s republican principles. We would have thought that steering Ireland into a position of subservient state to a new EU federal government would be contrary to those principles… surely? We wish Brian luck and hope he can make a difference to the direction of Europe from his new grouping. Although DDI is Europe friendly we are also EU skeptic in policy and are keen to see a different structure in Europe from the top down model that is being constructed. So we will be watching developments with interest.

well said. Looking at FF response to this is” well we have been 50 years in this party, so why would we want to change” Maybe Brian is seeing the huge swell of change in Europe and fair play to him for going against the so called party whip. If only we had DD, there would be no need for this whip.

Is this not an example of the type of thing you’re supposed to be against? Politicians running on one platform, then switching after they get elected?

Or is it another case of the rats leaving the sinking ship. Soon DDI will be the only one afloat so make sure all the engines are working and the lifeboats ready.
