EU Commission Non-privatisation Promises Hold No Water

This time one year ago a European Citizen’s Initiative was accepted by the EU Commission and water privatisation was to be removed from the Concessions Directive. Twelve months later under instruction the Irish government continues to privatise our water.

Here’s what they said:

“For months now, there have been reports that the European Commission is trying to privatise water by the back door, through its proposal on concessions. This has never been the intention. (…) Despite all the changes to the legal text, (…) it is my judgment that the text we now have relating to water (…) does not provide the reassurances that citizens expect (…). That is why the best solution now appears to remove water from the scope of the concessions directive”. Statement by Commissioner Barnier. (full statement here)

Of course the government will say that Irish Water is not private but is a semi state body. It seems the only thing that is semi state about it is that it gets to keep all the profits and all the tax payers investment while the councils continue to do all the work. As we have seen with gradual privatisation of the other utilities this is only a stepping stone to full privatisation of water and sewerage. Irish Water is a private regiterred company. It  has been set up that way for one reason, so it can be sold on

So what happened to the EU promise? What is the point of the European Citizens Initiative and petitioning the EU if it means nothing to the member states?

Come on did we ever expect anything different, this is the body that made us vote twice on the Nice and Lisbon Treaties because we didn’t do what they wanted first time. Of course they will carry on regardless and do what they want to achieve their corporate federal superstate, where people’s lives are controlled entirely at the mercy of private corporations.

Only sovereign people can overrule these decisions and the EU and Irish government know that and have to respect that, hence their inability to progress without our Yes votes. There is only one way to seize back control and save this government and that is to reclaim sovereign referendums of the people.
