Ruairí O'Neill
Galway West Constituency

My name is Ruairí O’Neill. I am a candidate for Direct Democracy Ireland in Galway West.

I have lived most of my life in Connemara, County Galway. My longest absence was when I decided to emigrate to Canada. The plan was to go for five years and make a load of money. I stayed for twelve years and did not make a load of money. When I returned though, I did return with my greatest asset to date, my daughter.

My background is Welder, Silversmith, Painter, Sculptor, Carpenter and Landscape Photographer. I specialise in making Silver and Bronze Jewellery, Painting and Photography.

I have opened and closed numerous studios. With the cut backs and the Government’s Austerity campaign I know first hand how difficult it is to survive in business in Ireland.

I am online now and one of the most frustrating aspects of operating an online business is the prehistoric broadband ‘service’ in the West of Ireland.

The other frustrating aspect of doing business here is the lack of any decent mobile network.

Galway West needs an efficient broadband and mobile phone services. Technology needs to be invested in broadband and mobile services to bring the West of Ireland into the 21st. century. Private companies are not delivering the service Galway West needs and deserves.

To those that say, “Well you cannot expect the same services being a rural community”; I say, “We pay the same taxes as Dublin City so…”

My Election Priorities :

  1. Broadband throughout Galway West
  2. Mobile signal throughout Galway West
  3. Foster Entrepreneurship
  4. Create environment for real job creation
  5. Abolish Irish Water and Water Charges
  6. Abolish Local Property Tax
  7. Reconstruct the N59, R336 and R340 roads
