Michael Mc Dermott Cavan Monaghan
My name is Michael McDermott and I am contesting the 2016 General Election in Cavan and Monaghan for Direct Democracy Ireland a national citizen’s movement.
I am originally from Dublin and moved to Ballyjamesduff Co Cavan in 2008. I am married with three young children aged 2,3 and 8.
In 2011 I was part of the many working poor in Ireland and I was forced with my young family to emigrate to Australia with the hope to returning when the economy improved. Whilst there our Government was telling the country that people like me were emigrating for a lifestyle choice. This angered my wife and I, leaving our family and friends behind was the hardest thing we have ever had to do and I promised when I came back I would make a difference so no other families would have to go through that pain.
Since I have returned I have been helping in the fight against austerity and its harsh effects on people in this country. I spend time in Cavan Court House helping families fight against the bailed out banks since the Eviction Bill was passed in 2013. I am also the founding member of Cavan Says No to Water Charges. I try my best in all areas to help people in trouble and that is why I will be contesting the next election. With your help I will ensure the safety and prosperity of all citizens of Ireland. I want a bright future for all our children.
I am a member of Ballyjamesduff Community Council and I enjoy dealing with our local issues throughout the town. I am heavily involved in Cavan and Monaghan soccer and I have been the Chairman of Ballyjamesduff AFC for three years. I have coached children from ages 6 to 16 and last year I proudly got my under 16’s team to second place in the CMUL.
In my time within in the soccer club the most rewarding program I had the pleasure in helping setup is our Hat Trick Football program which was the first of it’s kind in Cavan and Monaghan. A new inclusive football programme for children aged from 6 to 12 years with Aspergers, ASD and ADHD. These children can play football in a fun environment.
As a TD I promise to
· Prioritise an increased Garda presence in Cavan and Monaghan to enhance the safety of our local towns and farming communities.
· Work to attract potential investors to Cavan/Monaghan to assist businesses and farming community through extra support and funding creating extra jobs in the region.
· Strive to bring extra funding for social housing and have mortgage supplement reinstated along with an increase for rent supplement recipients. We in Direct Democracy Ireland will be seeking a minimum 10% mortgage write-off all mortgages and extra support for those in difficulty.
· Seek to have all cuts made since 2008 for single parents, elderly and our most vulnerable reversed.
